Scouts is the oldest section at 1st Hensingham, we build on the adventures that you've had in Cubs with more exciting activities and challenges so that you're ready to move-on to Explorers.

We run a varied programme mixing traditional scouting and outdoor skills such as map reading, fire lighting, cooking and whittling with slightly more bizarre ideas like a "life auction" or making plant-pot catapults.  We try to make sure that there's plenty of adventure too - our scouts regularly get the chance to go sailing, kayaking, canoeing, climbing, hiking and air rifle shooting. We'll also try and arrange opportunities to do other cool activities like caving, skiing and ghyll scrambling.  Camps are rated as some of the best things we do (by both the Scouts and the leaders) - there are normally at least three opportunities to go camping every year and we try to run more camps when we can.

When you join Scouts you'll join one of our two Scout Troops. Our Troops are named after mountains - Skiddaw Troop meet on Wednesday nights and Helvellyn Troop meet on Thursdays.  With so much adventure to fit in we don't have time to stop, so during school holidays we run joint meetings for members of both Troops (this is often when we do some of our more adventurous activities).

Within the Troop you'll become part of a small group of scouts called a Patrol, we'll sometimes work in patrols to learn new skills, or to complete challenges and games in competition with the others.  Each patrol is led by a Patrol Leader & supported by an Assistant Patrol Leader, these are some of our older and more experienced Scouts.  In your first few weeks your patrol will help you settle in and show you how everything works.   Skiddaw Troop has Eagle, Falcon, Hawk, and Kestrel Patrols.  Hevellyn Troop has Badger, Otter, Stag, and Wolf Patrols.

During your first few weeks with us you'll get to try out some of the activities we do and get to know the leaders and the rest of your pack.  We'll also talk to you about making your promise and uniform so that you're ready to be invested.

Interested in joining? Get in touch with us via the contact form!

The Scout promise

Once you've had a chance to try us out for a few weeks and decide that you're ready to become a Scout, you'll make your Scout Promise.  The Promise is a simple way to celebrate our shared values and by making it, you're joining a worldwide family of over 50 million people. There are different versions of the Promise so that everyone can make a Promise that's meaningful to them irrespective of their background or belief.

You can find out more about the Promise, including the different versions available, here.

Uniform

Scout uniform shows everyone that you're part of something amazing and it gives you somewhere to show off all the badges that you'll earn.  (We may instruct you to wear something different if we're doing a specific activity.)

Scout uniform consists of a teal shirt or blouse, navy blue activity trousers, a Scout belt and our group necker (scarf).  Different Scout groups have different coloured neckers to help tell them apart, our necker is purple with a black border.

To order uniform, please speak to your section leader; for information about sizes and pricing, please download a copy of our Scout uniform order form.

You may also see some of our members wearing a black 1st Hensingham hoody - we get these made to order a couple of times a year.

Badges

Throughout your time in Scouts you'll have lots of opportunities to try new things and recognise your achievements by earning badges.

There are two main types of badges, challenge awards and activity badges - you'll get the chance to earn both by taking part in weekly meetings and going on camps.  However, a lot of the activity badges are designed to recognise Scouts' other hobbies and interests and encourage them to try new things outside of our normal meetings.  if you want to do this please talk to your section leaders first.  You can find out more about what the different badges are and how to earn them, and where to put them on your uniform by clicking on the links below (please note these links will take you to The Scouts HQ website):

Leadership team

Scouts is led by a team of adult volunteers supported by our Explorer Scout young leaders.  From time to time we may ask for extra help from parents, or you may see leaders from other sections popping in to helping out.  We're always keen to welcome new volunteers to the team - you can find out more here
