Summer camp success!

Posted by JonC on September 13, 2014

12 Scouts headed out to Ennerdale Scout Centre for the final week of the summer holidays for a week of traditional Scouting and adventure.  Having pitched the tents the Scouts made good progress in setting up the rest of camp - our Patrol Leaders successfully pioneering a washing up station and wood storage rack, and the younger Scouts made sure there was plenty of wood to store (and burn).

With camp established we were able to get on with the activities, starting with a night hike to the top of Anglers' Crag to gaze back on the twinkling lights of suburban West Cumbria. (Any suggestions that this was a devious ploy by the leaders to tire out the Scouts and make sure they went to sleep nice and quickly are entirely speculative and totally true!)

Over the next few days we had a go at axe throwing, whittling, archery, building and testing our own coracles and joined up with Explorers from Phoenix ESU for a half-day ghyll scrambling in Wasdale (thanks to Richard and Carol from CarolClimb for giving us a great time).  The Scouts also found time to help Pheonix with some maintenance around the campsite and parent's had a much smoother drive down the track at the end of camp!

Wednesday saw the return of the camp cooking competition - all the Scouts had been helping cook throughout the week as part of their Camp Cook activity badge - but this time there was more than hunger to be addressed - pride, and the coveted wooden spoon trophies, were at stake.  All the Scouts did well making it a close competition, and our very own Terode & Wallace had a real struggle to pick the overall winners; in the end it was the washing up that swung it - congratulations to Ben W, Ben S, Levi W-G & Matt C.

As the week drew on a bit of R&R was needed so we headed to Keswick, after some free time in the town we headed to the leisure pool for splash about and then had time to squeeze in a round of crazy golf before a fish and chip supper.

Thanks to all the Scouts for a great week away - as leaders we feel very fortunate to get to work with such a fantastic group of young people - photos will be uploaded as soon as we get time (Alf's already loaded several to Flickr).
