Help us change lives ... it's good for you too!

Our Group is entirely run by volunteers.  The amazing programme of fun, challenges and different activities that our Beavers, Cubs and Scouts look forward to is only possibly thanks to our fantastic team of volunteers.

As well as helping our young members develop skills for life, volunteering with 1st Hensingham is good for you too.  As a volunteer you'll have a chance to learn new skills, make new friends, and have fun, all the while knowing that you're doing something that make a real difference to others.

You don't have to have been a Scout yourself to volunteer with us, lots of our volunteers hadn't had any involvement with Scouting until they volunteered as adults.  And if camping, cooking on fires and doing activities in the woods isn't your thing - there are lots of jobs "behind the scenes" that we need help with.

We've described a few of the common types of roles that our volunteers do below, but if you want to help us and one of these doesn't feel quite right, please get in touch and we'll help you find a role that helps us and suits you.

To make sure that we keep Scouting safe for everyone, all of our volunteers must pass a Disclosure and Baring Service (criminal records) check and complete some introductory training (this can be done online).  You can find more information about the DBS check process on our Safety and Safeguarding FAQs page.

If you'd like to volunteer, please fill out the contact us form.  One of our team will get in touch to help find a role that's right for you, and explain the next steps.

Section leaders, assistant section leaders and sectional assistants

These roles involve working directly with our awesome young people.  You'll help plan and deliver our programme of activities, teaching our youth members new skills and encouraging them to try new adventures.

We won't lie, these roles can be demanding at times, but they're also really rewarding.  You might be the friendly face that helps a nervous Beaver complete their first night away on camp, or you might be sharing the joy of a group of Scouts as they complete their expedition challenge that you've helped them prepare for.

You don't need to have any prior Scouting experience, providing you're willing to get stuck in and give it a go, we'll help you learn the skills you need as you go along.  And don't worry if work or family commitments mean that you can only commit to helping on certain weeks - several of our volunteers work shifts. Providing we know when you are available, we'll be grateful for your help.

Scout Active Support members

If you want to help deliver Scouting to our youth members but a section role isn't right for you then our Scout Active Support Unit (SASU) might be just the thing.  Our SASU members provide a pool of volunteers that our section leaders can call on when they need some extra help.

It might be providing an extra pair of hands one evening to help run an activity base on a challenge hike for the Scouts, or helping with the cooking for a Beaver sleepover, or helping transport and set-up all the kit needed for our big Group camps.

As a member of the SASU there's no minimum commitment - we'll ask when we're planning an event that needs help, and you let us know if you're able to assist.

Executive Committee members

Our Executive Committee members work behind the scenes to help ensure that our section leaders have the resources they need to deliver an amazing programme. As well as being the Trustees for the Group, they're responsible for fundraising, making sure that our equipment is maintained, and supporting Group Scout Leader in making sure that The Scouts' policies are being adhered to.

The committee meet half-termly, with small groups of committee members working on specific tasks between meetings.
